A spectral study of gamma-ray emitting AGN

چکیده

In this paper I investigate the γ-ray spectra of AGN by summing up the intensity and the power-law fit statistic of Quasars and OVV’s and BL Lac’s separately. The spectrum of the average AGN is softer than that of the extragalactic γ-ray background. It may be that BL Lac’s, of which the average has a harder spectrum than Quasars, make up the bulk of the extragalactic background. We also find cut-offs both at low and at high energies in the spectra of Quasars and OVV’s, however only at the time of γ-ray outbursts. While the cut-off at high energies may have something to do with opacity, the cut-off at low energies may be taken as indication that the γ-ray emission of Quasars is not a one component spectrum.

Modeling the Broad-Band Emission from the Gamma-Ray Emitting Narrow-Line Seyfert-1 Galaxies 1H 0323+342 and B2 0954+25A

Prior to the Fermi-LAT era, only two classes of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) were thought to harbor relativistic jets that radiate up to gamma-ray energies: blazars and radio galaxies. The detection of variable gamma-ray emission from Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies has put them on the spotlight as a new class of gamma-ray emitting AGN. In this respect, gamma-ray emitting NLSy1s seem to ...

IGR J12319–0749: evidence for another extreme blazar found with INTEGRAL

We report on the identification of a new soft gamma-ray source, IGR J12319–0749, detected with the IBIS imager on board the INTEGRAL satellite. The source, which has an observed 20−100 keV flux of ∼8.3 × 10−12 erg cm−2 s−1, is spatially coincident with an active galactic nucleus (AGN) at redshift z = 3.12. The broad-band continuum, obtained by combining XRT and IBIS data, is flat (Γ = 1.3) with...

Gamma-ray Emitting Agn and Unified Schemes A

Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are now known to be strong γ-ray emitters. After briefly describing the different classes of AGN and the basic tenets of unified schemes, I discuss the role of blazars (that is BL Lacs and flat-spectrum radio quasars) as γ-ray sources. The main properties of blazars and their connection with relativistic beaming are then summarized. Finally, I address the question o...

Observation of Extragalactic Sources of Very High Energy Γ-rays with the Magic Telescope

MAGIC is currently the largest single dish ground–based imaging air Cherenkov telescope in operation. During its first cycle of observations more than 20 extragalactic objects have been observed, and very high energy γ-ray signals have been detected in several of them. The results of this observations are presented, together with a discussion of the spectral characteristics and the flux variabi...

Gamma-ray emitting AGN and GLAST

I describe the different classes of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and the basic tenets of unified schemes. I then review the properties of the extragalactic sources detected in the GeV and TeV bands, showing that the vast majority of them belong to the very rare blazar class. I further discuss the kind of AGN GLAST is likely to detect, making some predictions going from the obvious to the likely...
